Description
Prof. Stefan Sleijfer, MD, PhD, is Chairman of the Executive Board of Erasmus MC and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Erasmus University Rotterdam. He was appointed Dean in 2021 and Chairman in 2022, and was reappointed to both positions in 2025. He studied medicine and obtained his PhD at the University of Groningen, and has been with Erasmus MC since 1998, first as a resident in internal medicine. He became professor of Medical Oncology in 2011 and Head of the Department of Medical Oncology in 2013. As a researcher he worked on translational oncology, sarcoma and biomarkers including circulating tumor cells and cell-free DNA, and he chaired the Center for Personalised Cancer Treatment. His leadership centers on the connection between care, research and education: an academic center that excels in knowledge and quality, and that is equally committed to societal relevance and responsibility. With its strategy, Erasmus MC focuses on complex patient care, on research addressing major societal health challenges, and on education that prepares students for the care of tomorrow. Innovative technology plays a central role in that agenda: supporting health professionals, easing workload, and giving patients greater control over their own care. At the AI for Health Summit 2026 he discusses what the responsible use of artificial intelligence requires: clinical value, careful handling of health data, and collaboration between hospitals, universities, industry and government.
